I have been quite open in online radfem spaces that I would rather accept a gender-neutral “it” than a “he”, but I suspect they just see that as stubborness. Like the judgemental religious types whom they so curiously resemble on this issue, the radicals see nothing unique or special in us other than our wilful, depraved refusal to accept (their version of) reality.
For the record, I share a trade union with devout Muslims, many of whom no doubt regard me with great pity or disapproval. That doesn’t stop them sticking up for my equal employment rights, just as I would stand by them if anyone threatened to restrict their prayer times, remove their facilities, etc, though I am not Muslim myself. There is a lot of power in agreeing to differ, as really powerful people learned a long time ago: the greedy and corrupt know how to lay aside their differences when there is profit to be made. A pity sincerely well-meaning and idealistic people are often so atrocious at it.
