A Midwinter Daydream

An unkempt cottage garden combe
where windfall apples dot wet grass
and softly glow in stubborn gloom

Blackbirds loudly chook chook chook
and frozen fruit glowing like brass
lures them close to take a look

in biting cold so vital oh
in biting, unforgiving cold
in biting cold so vital oh
in unforgiving cold

Watching still, watching these birds
as dancing time slows down at last
and tangles in my grassy words

then frozen time, the windfelled fruit
no future hint or echo past
just chuckling scratching darkling root

behold this clear moment serene
A midwinter day’s frosty dream
behold this clear moment serene
A frozen frosty dream
